Hi Charlie, it was with great interest that I heard of your website. I joined Berkshire about 1956, I was one of the first in charge of the new seamfree machines with Jim McIlwaine and Roger Getty. After my training I started most of the new machines. Some of the people who came into the department were Martin Campbell, Martin Brown, Billy Cromie, Ivor Gunning, Eddie Devlin, Robert Devlin, Hugh Adair, Jimmie Moore, Hugh Brown, Hugh McCullough. Harry Kennan came in at a later date. Among the Maintenance staff was David Brown in charge, Billy Kennan and John Pritchard. Hugh Brown was a very good friend I visited Hugh often and we talked of the good old days I must not forget one of our characters 'Jessie James'. I hope this will bring back some memories. David Hollinger....Thanks David, I hope some of your mates send me their comments about the 'buzz' about the new Seamfree Department at that time. More from David..17th Feb 2007. Hi Charlie, Some more info you may be interested in Some more members of the seamfree were Alan Graham, Nicky Shanks, RobertMcVeigh, George Ross, Eric Brown and DanMcAvoy. My cousin JohnHollinger looked after the seaming machines, Wilbert Magill was supervisor. Maurice Agnew and Maurice McAuley were electricans, David Mckitterick and Bob Busby were boilermen and helped in the gardens. The main road into the factory was opposite my mothers house Ballyharry Cottage but this was changed to the two later roads. The land was purchased from Jim Donnan who then purchased a farm at the start of the dual carrageway on the Newtownards Comber road, the monkey puzzle tree that was in the farmhouse garden is still there . Knitwear Quality Control Dept Manager until 1972 |

Hi Charlie, Your Nylon website is a great idea, it brings back a lot of memories of my 15 years there .I started working in the Testing room in the QC dept with you and Reggie Naylor in July 1957, age 16.Testing yarns, bursting fabrics ,remember all that and covering all the windows with brown paper to talk photos of the fabrics for the sales reps.
My wife Irene has found an original copy of the Staff photo taken by Stevenson's and dated 13th Dec.57, so I had only been there 6 months; I remember most of those faces as if it was yesterday . When the Knitwear Division started I moved from hosiery to take charge of the QC Dept. and was Manager until 1972 when I left to join Littlewoods Stores in Liverpool.
Littlewoods were taken over by Primark in Nov.05 and I have been retired since then .I will be in touch again. Keep up the good work.
Regards
Lindsay...Hi Irene, Thanks for sorting out that photograph's date for me..Charlie
