My time in the Berkshire ...a Family Affair.
Having moved to Newtownards I applied for a job in the Berkshire, and was offerd a job in the dye-house.
The job was putting a quantity from a batch of tights into dye-bags or dye-nets to get them ready as a dye-lot. About 30-40 pairs of tights were shook to loosen them and then put into the bag. Each bag was tied tightly with nylon cut-offs and a rubber disk was added as well to identify it after it was dyed. I really enjoyed working with Dorothy Cromie and Agnes Neil. l My daughter, Pamela, worked in the Stitching room as a cutter, her husband  worked in the Knitting room, and then my son Dino started in the Packing room. distributing and collecting batches of work to and from the ladies who packed them .It was like a family affair, but we all enjoyed working there, and had many happy times. We were all very sorry when it closed. Meeting the Computers....the rest is history
Hi Charlie

I started working for Berkshire Hosiery in 1964.   Mr Wickens was Personnel Manager at that time and I was given a typing test by Eileen Woods, Mr Wickens secretary, who incidentally was my cousin.

My first job with Berkshire was as an Accounting Machine Operator working with Billie Warnock and Agnes Carpenter (now Thompson).  My wage at that time was £5 per week and I was not long there when Kevin Armstrong the Office Manager increased my wages to £5.50.

Before long Berkshire introduced us to the Computer age.  All the Office Staff were given IQ tests resulting in 2 Punch Card Operators and 2 Verifiers being chosen. The fifth task was to operate the sorting machine and that was given to me.

Brian Andrews was the Computer Room Manager.

Just thought I would add my contributon.

Freda Fulton .......Thank you Freda
