My name is Audrey Warnock Chestney and my very first job was that of Invoice Typist for Mr. Bob Walker in the Shipping Department.
I was sent from the "Tech" to interview since I was top of my class in 1953 and I guess Berkshire needed a good typist ... Ena Geddis was Secretary to the Managing Director, (Mr. Foster) and Ruby Dunn was Secretary to Mr. Ward. Brian McMeekin was the Sales Director although he shared Ena or Ruby when he needed help. However, as sales increased, his needs became greater and I was given the opportunity to act as his secretary until it became a permanent position.
We had wonderful Christmas parties that I remember fondly. It was a great place to work and the American connection gave me ideas to "go west" and I left for California to work for a year as a Nanny in April of 1960. Earlier that year I had been chosen "Miss Berkshire". However that year stretched into 47 as of this writing.
I remember we had a really good Canteen staffed by really friendly and kind staff and the grounds were lovely. I spent many a lunch hour just sitting under the trees enjoying the flowers and shrubs.
Hazel Montgomery Croskery was Receptionist after our new offices were built and Hazel left to join her husband to be in Texas in 1959. Hazel and I have kept in touch over the years and I actually had my wedding reception at her home in California.
Incidentally, my cousin Gloria Adair Patterson succeeded me as the Secretary to the Sales Director who by then was George Clarke. Gloria is also now in the U.S. I do have photographs and maybe I can have them scanned and forwarded to you.
Including the U.S. I have lived in Germany for a couple of years and in Israel for 8 months before moving to Texas. We live in Austin which is the State capitol. I have two boys.
We were back there in June and July this year and that is how I found out about the webpage.
Thank you for the opportunity to share some great memories.
