On Wednesday morning 24th January 2007 the above website was officially launched at a little ceremony
in the Somme Heritage Centre, Bangor Road, Newtownards. Co Down Northern Ireland.

Charlie Davidson had received considerable help from most of those attending and he was delighted that the
forty invitations to attend were all instantly accepted. This he conceded was as much for them to take the opportunity to meet former Berkshire fellow-workers as it was to learn about the website via a Powerpoint presentation, by Alan Cardwell.

Two things which had encouraged him were firstly, eight pages of hand-written text by the 89 year old former Chief Executive, Mr Alex Fetherston and secondly the beauty of the painting "The Berkshire" by the Newtownards artist, Ron Ritchie. The artist's uncle, Bertie Ritchie, was among the first knitters to be employed at the Ballyharry factory.
The painting is now owned by John Wright who was a former Berkshire employee.

Charlie welcomed the Mayor and Mayoress, Angus and Jean Carson, together with the local MLA Jim Shannon.
The Mayor recalled having served with Charlie on the Committee of Child Evangelism Fellowship and thanked him for the invitaion to him, and Mayoress Jean, to share the event.

Angus could well remember the high amount of traffic which daily passed his home on the Donaghadee Road every morning and again in the evening. The factory, at its high-day, had 1500 employees and was of great economic benefit to Newtownards and the surrounding area.
Jim Shannon added that employees had travelled from as far as Portaferry, Ballyhalbert, Ballywalter and all the villages in between. The three shift system, and, at times the evening housewives-shift, required a lot of stamina from those involved.
